In collaboration with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, Lazy Dodo is paying a tribute to the now extinct Dodo bird by being the Silver Species Champion of the Mauritius Olive White-eye.

The dodos lived in the forests of Mauritius, and had a thriving population until the Dutch and Portuguese reached the island towards the end of the 1500s, dwindling their numbers until their extinction around 1681. The dodo frequently appears in works of popular fiction, even before its extinction, as a symbol for exotic lands and for an affinity to being lazy. They were fearless and flightless, and with an abundance of food and no predators (other than traveling sailors), they lived the most indolent life on the island.

The Mauritius Olive White-eye (Zosterops chloronothos) is the rarest and most threatened of the endemic Mauritian birds. The number of Olive White-eyes has fallen drastically since the early 1970s, coinciding with the last large-scale forest clearance on Mauritius. In 2005, conservation action was considered essential to decrease the risk of extinction of this attractive small bird whose habitat had dwindled to a few separated areas in the Black River Gorges National Park.

The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation aims to save the Olive White-eye by protecting the area they live in and maintaining a population of birds on the island of Ile aux Aigrettes, off the south coast.

The objectives:

  • Decrease the risk of extinction of the species from ‘Critically Endangered’ to ‘Endangered’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list of threatened species, in the next decade.
  • Study method of predator control which enable a large area of forest to be protected from rats their impact on the breeding success of the species is a very significant factor.
  • Activities being implemented are the introduction of the Olive White-eye to a “mainland island”, an area where predators are reduced.
  • Monitor the wild population of birds at Combo and monitor the survival of released birds and fledglings on Ile aux Aigrettes.
  • Provide supplementary food to support the reintroduced populations.

The project beneficiaries:

  • The Mauritius Olive White-eye bird and the Mauritian Biodiversity.
  • The Mauritian population and its future generations
  • The Republic of Mauritius, regarding meeting national biodiversity targets (The National Biodiversity and Strategy Action Plan 2006-15) and fulfilling obligations towards international biodiversity conventions (Rio Conventions, Aichi Targets, Millennium Development Goals).

In 2024, Lazy Dodo is partnering with Helios Eyewear to save the Mauritian Olive White-eye bird.

An exclusive sunglass collection has been created. These glasses are injected with the Grilamid TR90 polymer and contain more than 58% plant-based and renewable materials.

Their sale in 20/Vin stores raises funds to finance the Mauritian Olive White-eye bird conservation efforts, through the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation.
